Tree Root Excavation Key to Health and Safety
Your trees depend up strong, stable and healthy roots to survive. That’s why a thorough inspection of the root system is so important.
Warning Signs of Root Problems
An inspection by your Liberty Arborist may identify symptoms of root problems. Mushrooms at the base of the tree, stunted growth or branch dieback are just a few of the warning signs.
Excavating Tree Roots Will Expose the Roots for Evaluation
To get a clear view of what’s happening with the roots, it’s important to get underground. A root collar excavation removes soil to expose the roots for inspection.
Reasons to Do a Tree Root Excavation
Your tree’s root system may be suffering from issues such as girdling roots, root disease or soil compaction. Tree root excavation enables us to:
- Evaluate Root Health: Excavation provides a clear view of the roots to inspect structure, check for root diseases and stability.
- Diagnose Root Diseases: Root rot and other disease can make a tree unsafe. If the root system is severely damaged, tree removal is usually recommended
- Remove Girdling Roots: Instead of growing out, girdling roots wrap around the trunk. As the tree trunk gets fatter, girdling roots tighten and restrict circulation. Once girdled, water and nutrients can’t flow easily up from the roots to the canopy. Additionally, the sugars manufactured in the leaves can’t reach the roots. Over time, the side of the tree with the girdling roots will begin to decline and eventually die. Pines, Maples (excluding Silver Maple), Lindens and Magnolias are especially susceptible.
Girdling roots removal is not a simple procedure. These roots can grow very close and become embedded in the trunk. If removal is possible, our tree experts know how much of the root can be safely removed while protecting the trunk and other roots from damage. - Reduce Soil Compaction: As natural part of the process, root excavation loosens the soil to reduce compaction and help roots to breathe.
Root collar excavations are an essential procedure for uncovering and addressing problems. You can trust us to provide expert solutions that promote root health and overall tree vitality. If you are concerned about your trees, contact us for a free inspection.
